Commemorating Significant History

A project to commemorate the events of 1964 that led to the passage of landmark civil rights legislation, the Civil Rights District is focused on Kelly Ingram Park, the historic organizing point for civil rights marches, as well as the 16th Street Baptist Church, where a racist bombing killed four young girls. The master plan includes several sculptures by eminent artists that focus on significant events of the movement. The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute overlooks the park and the church and contains exhibits that present a narrative of critical events of the movement.
