A thorough rehabilitation revitalizes one of Atlanta’s oldest streets in advance of the 1996 Olympic Games. Collaborating with noted artist/sculptor Mel Chen, we developed a plan to enliven the thoroughfare with patterned black and white pavers that recall the city’s long history of conflict and accommodation among the races. The landmark Henry Grady statue was renovated and relocated as part of the plan. Chen’s inspired art installation unfortunately wasn’t funded.
